Juicy Soy Strips for Dogs in a Mild Beetroot Sauce

One pot for the base, one sauce as a highlight – and in the end, a bowl that won’t sit around for long. This combination brings together a gentle, easy-to-digest base with hearty soy strips in a slightly sweet beetroot sauce.

As always, tested by Tobyas and clearly rated with “paws up”.

Quick Overview

🕒 Prep time: approx. 45 minutes
👩🏼‍🍳 Difficulty: easy

Ingredients (about 3-4 servings for a 25-30 kg dog)

Happi-Base

  • 60 g red lentils
  • 2 medium potatoes
  • ½ zucchini
  • 1 small carrot
  • water
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed

Soy Strips & Sauce

  • 50-70 g soy big steaks (dry)
  • water for soaking
  • 80-100 g pre-cooked beetroot (+ a little juice)
  • 1 small carrot
  • ½ zucchini
  • 1 tsp rapseed oil
  • 1-2 tbsp unsweetened oat or soy drink (optional)
  • vegan omega-3 oil (optional)

Instructions

Soy Strips & Sauce

  1. Simmer the soy big steaks in hot water for about 10–15 minutes.
  2. Squeeze out well and cut into strips.
  3. Chop carrot and zucchini, then simmer with about 120 ml water for approx. 10 minutes until soft.
  4. Add beetroot and 1–2 tbsp of its juice, then blend until smooth.
  5. Add the soy strips and let them simmer gently for 5–10 minutes so they absorb the flavour.
  6. Optionally add a splash of plant-based milk for a creamier texture.
  7. Turn off the heat, stir in the oil and allow to cool slightly.

Happi Base

  1. Peel the potatoes and wash lentils and vegetables.
  2. Cut into small cubes (approx. 1–1.5 cm).
  3. Place everything in a pot, cover with water and simmer gently for 15–20 minutes until soft.
  4. Lightly mash (do not blend) and stir in the flaxseed. Let cool.

Serving

Place the base in the bowl and top with the soy strips and sauce. Recommended ratio: about 60-70% base and 30-40% sauce. Optionally drizzle with a little omega-3 oil.

Notes

  • This dish works well as a fresh addition or alongside a balanced complete food. For long-term feeding, make sure to supplement essential nutrients properly.
  • Adjust the size of the soy strips to your dog’s eating habits. Tobyas chews his food, so larger strips work well. Maya, on the other hand, would have needed much smaller pieces – she tended to inhale her meals.
  • The soy strips and sauce can also be prepared in a cooking machine if preferred.
